  • The eleventh edition of the 4K HDR Summit will take place from 11 to 14 November, with two in-person days (Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12) at the Cartuja Auditorium in Seville TechPark and another two virtual days.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), a global leader in the defence and promotion of public broadcasting, will be represented at the next edition of the 4K HDR Summit in Seville, where it will present its vision for the future of audiovisual media, coinciding with the commemoration of its 75-year history.

The eleventh edition of the 4K HDR Summit will bring together the most prominent figures in the audiovisual industry, including some of the leading European broadcasters such as RTVE, France TV and RAI. It will take place from 11 to 14 November in Seville over four days — two in-person at the Cartuja Auditorium in Seville TechPark and two virtual.

Since its foundation in 1950 in Torquay (United Kingdom), the EBU has been a driving force for international cooperation, technological innovation and the creation of public service content. At the 4K HDR Summit, the European organisation will share with professionals from around the world a journey through its evolution, from the first television signal exchanges to its leadership in global projects such as Eurovision and Euroradio.

Responsible for a multitude of innovative technological projects

The EBU is a benchmark in the audiovisual industry and has led the development and adoption of technical standards that have marked milestones in television: from colour television to the transition to high definition (HD), digital terrestrial television (DVB) and currently Ultra High Definition (UHD), in addition to other technologies such as HDR.

Frans de Jong, senior engineer in the Media Fundamentals and Production Technology Unit at the European Broadcasting Union, will participate in the eleventh edition of the 4K HDR Summit, where he will discuss some of the main projects currently being undertaken by the institution that brings together Europe’s leading broadcasters.

He is currently involved in international standardisation groups (ETSI, ITU, DVB) and in defining practices for remote production, scalable streaming and immersive experiences. It also works on a multitude of projects related to technological innovation, public service and digital media, including 5G-EMERGE, which explores the convergence of 5G and satellite networks to distribute audiovisual content more efficiently.

Its 2024-2025 annual report highlights its work on High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology, which evaluates the performance of multiple models of professional monitors and new recommendations on the R-167 standard to define preconfigured modes on HDR-HLG monitors, ensuring consistency between devices. In the same report, it presented EBU NEO, an AI-powered news chatbot, the result of collaboration between members, which is already operational on Swedish Radio platforms.

The EBU has also launched the Media Technology Futures Group (MTF), a research and innovation group made up of its members’ leading R&D laboratories. Its aim is to anticipate the technologies that will shape the future of the media. The MTF focuses its work on three main areas: content creation, media delivery and distribution, and improving the user experience. It also promotes new formats for interaction and personalisation that place public broadcasting at the forefront of technology.

He has also promoted Security4Media, a new non-profit association of media organisations and technology providers dedicated to reducing cyber risks and supporting trust in the media. In total, he is involved in more than a dozen projects, including C2PA, C2PA in production, AI Sandbox, 5G-MAG, EuroVOX and PEACH, TEMS, veraAI, XReco and TRAMSMIXR, among others.
