Established as a benchmark event for Ultra High Definition, the summit “where technology and content have time to talk” will once again place Seville at the global audiovisual and technological epicentre.

Spain leads the global push for UHD

In this edition, Spain, a global leader and benchmark in UHD, will play a leading role. The year 2025 will be remembered as a turning point for audiovisual technology thanks to the approval of the new National Technical Plan for Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), which consolidates Spain as one of the most dynamic drivers in Europe and the world in the development and implementation of UHD. Julia Criado, Deputy Director of Radio Spectrum Planning and Management at the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration, will talk about this major step forward and the evolution of DTT towards DVB-T2/UHD, as well as new spectrum opportunities for the audiovisual sector.

During the opening session, Matías González, Secretary General of Telecommunications, Digital Infrastructure and Digital Security, will participate on behalf of the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration, along with Álvaro Pimentel, Deputy Mayor of Seville City Council; Luis Pérez, Director General of Sevilla TechPark; Juande Mellado, Director General of RTVA; and Víctor Sánchez in his capacity as president of UHD Spain.

To talk about the promotion of Ultra High Definition is to talk about Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) and UHD Spain. Both entities are playing a key role in the development and implementation of UHD in our country, leading pioneering projects in the production, broadcasting and distribution of content in the highest quality. Their presence at the 4K HDR Summit will serve to share experiences, showcase advances and reinforce Spain’s role as an international benchmark in the evolution of the audiovisual ecosystem.

In February 2024, TVE’s La 1 became the first DTT channel in the world to begin regular broadcasts in UHD, making Spain a world leader in broadcasting using this technology. Representing the public broadcaster at the opening day will be Javier Sánchez, Director of Audiovisual Policy and Public Service at RTVE; Adriana Vázquez, Director of Production and Media at RTVE; and Jesús García, Technical Director at TVE; as well as Víctor Sánchez, Director of Media and Operations at TVE.

The UHD Spain association will be another of the major players at the 4K HDR Summit, where it will present the results of a market study on viewers’ knowledge, understanding and perception of UHD in Spain, carried out in 2025. This will be led by Xavi Redón, Vice-President of UHD Spain, who will also moderate the panel ‘UHD comes to Spanish regional television stations’, in which some members of the Federation of Regional Radio and Television Organisations (FORTA) will participate, such as RTVA, EiTB, Televisión de Galicia and Telemadrid. Similarly, once again, Spanish regional television stations (FORTA) and their technical directors will hold an in-person Technical Commission meeting to discuss technological advances in Ultra High Definition (UHD) and HDR (High Dynamic Range), which improve the quality of images reaching homes, as well as the exchange of 4K content and its future implementation within their internal communication networks.

For his part, Víctor Sánchez, Director of Media and Operations at TVE and President of UHD Spain, will head the association’s large delegation, which will take advantage of the 4K HDR Summit to hold its General Assembly of members, attended by representatives of the 34 associated members.

The association will also pay tribute to two key figures in the promotion of Ultra High Definition in Spain: Ricardo Medina, founder of Medina Media in 2004 and UHD Spain in 2021, and José Manuel Menéndez, professor at the Higher Technical School of Telecommunications Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and director of the RTVE-UPM Chair since its creation in 2015. Both key figures in the development of Ultra High Definition in Spain will receive a moving posthumous recognition for their legacy in the audiovisual industry.

Innovation and leadership from space in the UHD era

The eleventh edition of the 4K HDR Summit will feature three satellite giants: SES, Hispasat and Eutelsat. The presence of SES, Hispasat and Eutelsat at the summit reinforces the role of satellite as a driver of next-generation television development, thanks to its ability to distribute content in maximum UHD, 4K and HDR quality with global coverage, high bandwidth and stable signal quality, even in areas with limited terrestrial infrastructure . Michele Gosetti Di Sturmeck, VP, Sports & Events & New Media at SES, will share the company’s latest innovations in satellite distribution and new audiovisual services during the opening day, including ASTRATV, a proposal that makes all the main national DTT channels available to everyone.

For his part, Cristiano Benzi, Senior Vice President Global Video Product Development at Eutelsat Group, will address the challenges and opportunities facing the industry in its transition to IP environments and hybrid platforms  in his presentation entitled ‘4K, IP, FAST, LEO: how satellite is adapting to a rapidly evolving media environment‘.  In addition,  Jorge Rodríguez, Head of Product and Marketing at Hispasat, will present the company’s vision of the present and future of Ultra High Definition (UHD), highlighting the role of satellite as an efficient and sustainable means of distribution.

More than a dozen regional, national and international channels will participate in the eleventh edition of the 4K HDR Summit. Among them will be Andalusian public television, represented by Rafael Porras, President of RTVA; Juande Mellado, Director General of RTVA; and Juanma Blanco Poley, Director of Canal Sur Media, who will talk about CanalSur Más, the on-demand television platform, and its commitment to segmented television. In addition, the 4K HDR Summit 2025 will serve as a showcase to give voice and presence to female talent in the audiovisual and technology industry. Cisco will be represented by María Martín Jódar, Broadcast Account Manager, and María Isabel Arias, Head of Security in Iberia for Broadcast, who will participate in the presentation ‘Ensuring change: Navigating the Inflection Point of IT, AI and Media Technologies’, in which they will address how key innovations such as IP networking and Artificial Intelligence, while driving efficiency and flexibility, also demand an urgent reassessment of the role of security. The presentation will argue that security must move from being a secondary concern to becoming the cornerstone of this new era, proposing the strategic use of AI agents for operations and observability as an essential tool for ensuring complete and proactive visibility.
